Medical billing has become a fast growing occupation that is flexible, remote friendly (you can work from home) and offers a decent salary. Training programs and schools can vary in cost and length as well as reputation. There are many scams out there so the best thing to do is educate yourself on what is the best choice for you by asking the proper questions.

What is your post graduate career placement opportunity?

If you are going to invest your hard earned time and money into a training program it is best to find out if there may be employment assistance, post-graduation, before you commit. Ask the school if they offer a career placement program and/or an internship. Visit the job placement or career advancement office and talk to the person in charge or to a capable counselor. Read any literature they offer, ask for a sample list of jobs being placed and the possible percentage of successfully placed candidates. Also, find out if there are any graduates that you can contact and speak to  so you can find out how or if the job placement program helped them. If the school does not offer a career placement department, try to find another school that does.

What are the credentials of your instructors?

As the old saying goes, “Those who cannot do, teach.” You need to be trained by the best in the field not a burned out instructor that is simply in it for a paycheck. If the program has a website, search for the biography of its instructors. Make sure they are certified and possess ‘real work’ experience. A medical biller that has his or her finger on the current pulse of the business is much better than those who have been out of the field and are simply teaching their antiquated techniques. In addition, make an appointment with some instructors to ask them about the program, what to expect from their class and how they personally feel about the medical billing field.

How long is the program?

If you have a certain time frame you need to complete your studies in be sure and find out how long the training will be. Some schools will stretch out their curriculum to simply add a continued tuition to their fiscal benefit.

What are my scheduling options?

Find out how difficult it is to switch around your schedule if you do not respond to a certain teacher or time requirement. The more flexible a program, the better it is for you especially if you are working a job at the same time you are attending school. This also applies to any off site hands on training that may require you to adhere to a specific internship schedule.

Do you offer a guidance counselor?

Having someone to question and confide in can be a great stress reliever. See if the program offers someone to help you along with your studies and/or future job placement.
