7 Things That You Need To Know About Online Education

For whatever the reason, economics, time constraints, a day job or other responsibilities, online education leading to a degree has become a welcomed and alternate resource for advanced studies. So much so, a recent survey estimated that almost 5 million students now study online. Another report suggests 44 percent of students in a post secondary education throughout the U.S.A. are taking some of their courses on the net. Projections for the number of online students are estimated to reach 81 percent of the total student population in the U.S.A. by the year 2014.

One can conclude from these figures that elearning is here to stay. And there are many other good reasons to support that claim.

Fact
- In most cases online students, perform better than traditional students in face-to-face courses.

Fact - One qualified recognized great teacher can reach thousands at a time via the internet. How many could you put in a single classroom?

Fact - 24/7 E-learning classes allow students to self pace their learning experience and choose locations, a coffee shop, at work, at home or anywhere they can connect to the internet. They are not required to be in a specific place at a certain time.

Fact
- Marshall McLuhan a few years ago coined the phrase, “The medium is the message,” or the medium embeds itself in the message. Using and developing your internet/computer skills in the elearning process prepares students for a life in the 21st century business world.

Fact - Elearning is far less costly per credit hour than traditional learning

Fact - In terms of the training/learning time required, it is much faster

Fact - Internet studies allow for universal access

Fact - Students appear to be as satisfied with elearning as they are with traditional teaching methods.

Fact - Acceptance of this type of study now includes online doctoral programs by some top research universities.

Online Degrees Are Accredited: There are plenty of courses available online but only legitimate degrees are certified. Phoenix Online University, Excelsior College, N.Y, Devry University, Kaplan University to name a few, are accepted by the leading employers throughout the world. These online degrees are treated as equivalent to the traditional degree programs.

Online Courses Offer New Methods Of Learning: Students have the option of choosing from wide range of disciplines offered in online courses. Tests and regular examinations are self paced and can be completed within flexible frameworks and timelines. Students benefit from tailored programs with flexible hours of study, the use of new technologies all this and more offered in online degree programs.

Courses For Different Academic Levels:
There are doctorate, masters, bachelors, Associates, and diploma programs to choose from. Most of the educational institutions such as Nova Southeastern University, Regent University, Upper Iowa University, Champlain College, LeTourneau University offer courses in wide ranges of disciplines and in different levels of academic achievement.

Government Regulations Guarantee Authenticity Of Online Programs:
According to the College Opportunity and Affordability Act 2008, each and every online course that receives funds from the central government must verify that the students who are registering themselves with the course are completing the coursework himself/herself.

Online Degrees Are Funded By Scholarships As Well As Federal Loans: Certified elearning schools qualify for grants and scholarships offered by State and Federal governments.

The Myth

Hopefully by now any doubts you may have as to the credibility and many advantages, of elearning have been dispelled. Unless frat parties and the social interaction found on campus is an attractive part of your learning experience, an online education presents a viable option for consideration.

No matter what option you choose, today, more than ever before, furthering your education is a key to future success. As Will Durant said.

“Education is a progressive study of our own ignorance.”

Now we can be ignorant “online.”

I find online classes are great except for labs. I'm more of a hands-on learner and that is difficult for me.

I agree with PaulaHenry, except for labs online classes are great. Now days its extremenly difficult almost impossible to get into classes at the regular community colleges. I will definatelly be looking into online classes.

I am trying to get an online HR certification from Cornell, but they don't offer financial aid. Has anyone else run into this issue?

They are a fraud and a joke. Nothing replaces going to class and sitting through a lecture. Online degrees are for sissys.

I looked into several online degree programs to complete my terminal degree. I found that most of these programs are for-profit and do not care about education, only enrollment. They don't care if you complete, only that you join and that you take out fat federal loans to pay nearly double the price for a comparable state school education. After they get their $$$, they couldn't care less if you complete. Even worse news is that school loan debt is non-dischargeable under current bankruptcy statutes. The end result is that if your program ends up being high-priced and that you might get your wages garnished should you not find a job following graduation.

Thanks for posting the education, there are too many myths about online degrees, especially the idea that they aren't as valid as a traditional degree.

The truth about online degrees is sadly that they often will not help you to get a job or advance in academics. Even getting a degree from a traditional program at a non-prestigious university will not do much to help you. There is a stigma to the openness of online degrees, much like online dating; there is an idea, true or not, that it is for those who could not succeed otherwise. Online programs in general do not have a good reputation, and make no mistake about it, when it comes to academics, reputation is everything.

A notable exception is when someone needs only a degree or certificate for a raise or promotion without any intention of pursuing higher academics. If learning the material is the most important thing, then feel free to study online, you'll be able to get out of it what you want. But if you have aspirations to pursue academics or obtain coveted positions, don't bother. There are thousands and thousands of graduates every year from traditional programs with very good reputations. The truth about online degrees is that they may be 'as valid' and 'equally accredited,' but they will not compete with their traditional counterparts.

Tony, try looking at this from the perspective of someone who never finished high school. Obtaining your diploma or GED online later in life to help them jumpstart their career is certainly something worth doing.
